Pomsky Health-related Issues and Genetic Diseases

Pomsky is one of the most popular designer breeds. This wolf-like fluffy nugget is a Pomeranian Siberian Husky cross and has inherited beauty and cuteness from both breeds.

Like any other breed, Pomskies do have some health-related issues, though, being a relatively new breed, you won’t find much information about them.

Today, we are going to feature all the possible diseases and health-related issues that a Pomsky puppy may inherit from its parent breeds; Pomeranian and Siberian Husky. It is also recommended to get a puppy from a reliable Pomsky breeder to reduce the risks of genetic issues.

Note: Regardless of the breed, all dogs are prone to all the common viral and bacterial infections such as rabies, distemper, Parvo, Leptospirosis, Canine influenza, etc. So, you are recommended to get your dogs vaccinated on time.

Let’s now find out more about Pomsky’s health below.

What diseases can Pomsky inherit from Siberian Husky?

Hip Dysplasia:

It is one of the most painful diseases that is commonly inherited by most large breeds and Huskies are no exception. The Siberian Huskies are prone to Hip Dysplasia which is a malformation of hip joints. X-ray of the parent’s hips can help overcome his issue in puppies. It is a very painful disease and can stop your dog from moving.

Hip Dysplasia should be treated as soon as it is witnessed. A responsible breeder would check the hip score of the parents before breeding them and if found vulnerable, the breeder would not breed them.

Arthritis:

Hip Dysplasia can further lead to Arthritis which is also a painful disease. Vets suggest that Hip Dysplasia and Arthritis should be treated as early as possible. The common symptoms of arthritis are lameness, weight gain, limping after resting for a long time, and the inability to climb stairs and run.

Degenerative Myelopathy:

It’s a neurological condition that causes weakness in the hind legs. The Siberian Huskies are more likely to get this disease than any other breed and similarly, the Pomskies can inherit it. A reputable breeder would get his dog tested before breeding to avoid the inheritance of Degenerative Myelopathy.

Autoimmune Skin Disease

It is a common skin disease in Siberian Huskies that causes hair loss and crusts. The worst part of this disease is that bacteria are more likely to attack the area of hair loss and lead to several skin infections.

So, these were some of the common diseases that a Pomsky may inherit from Siberian Huskies if they are not genetically tested prior to breeding.

Dental diseases

Pomeranian has more chances of getting dental diseases than most of the other dog breeds. If not taken care of their teeth, they are more like to lose their teeth which can further lead to some serious issues such as damage to the heart, liver, kidneys, and joints. Luckily, by cleaning your dog’s teeth regularly, you may cut the chances of dental diseases and infections.

Bladder Stones

Pomeranians and/or Pomskies may also inherit Hyperuricosuria (HU) which leads to stones in the pup’s bladder and sometimes in the Kidneys. It is recommended to conduct a DNA test to have a conclusion prior to breeding.

Tracheal Collapse

The trachea is a tractable tube that is responsible for keeping the airway open so the dogs can breathe without any hurdles. Sometimes it becomes weak in certain breeds such as Lhasa Apso, Toy Poodle, Chihuahua, and Shih Tzu. In tracheal collapse, your dog will not be able to breathe smoothly.

Luxating Patella

It is a common health-related issue in certain small-sized breeds in which the kneecap slips out from its place due to bone malformation. It is a painful disease and needs to be treated asap or the condition may get worse. Usually, surgery is needed to get the kneecap back on its pace.

Usually, the veterinarian performs a manual exam of the kneecap to make a conclusion about the presence of Luxating Patella. A reputable and responsible breeder would get their breeding dogs examined and if any grade of Luxating Patella is diagnosed, the dogs MUST not be bred.

Things to do before getting a Pomsky puppy

To avoid getting a puppy that could inherit such health conditions from its parents, try getting a puppy from a well-reputed and responsible Pomsky breeder. A responsible and ethical breeder would never breed its dogs for money but for health, temperament, and quality.

Also, ask for parents’ health records, DNA tests, as well as, the puppies’ health certificates. Make sure you vaccinate your puppies as per the schedule and take them to visit at least every six months to avoid an unpredicted disease.

Final Words:

So, these were some of the genetic conditions that a Pomsky puppy may inherit from its parents. To avoid such issues, try to get your puppy from a reputable Pomsky breeder that breeds its dogs as per the standards.
