You may already have a question about the existence of this crossbreed because both breeds have a huge difference in their sizes. But it’s now possible due to the IVF technique (In Vitro Fertilization) which is a helpful method of crossing two different breeds of different sizes.

If you are planning to get a Chihuahua/Siberian Husky mix and looking for a comprehensive guide on the breed, this article is the best place for you to learn more about this breed.

Origin of the Chihuahua Husky mix

There is no documented proof of the first intentional or unintentional breeding of this dog. But one thing is for sure it is a new breed that was developed scientifically through IVF which is also known as the Artificial Insemination Method.

Due to its small size, female Chihuahua couldn’t carry pups of a male Siberian husky. Therefore it is mandatory to consider Husky as a mother and Chihuahua as a father.

There is not much information about this hybrid dog’s physical and behavioral traits. Still, we can learn and predict its physical features and behavioral traits by putting a closer eye on its parent breeds.

Parent Breeds

Chihuahua

Named after the Mexican city Chihuahua, the national dog of Mexico is small in size but has a huge personality. With extraordinary capabilities, it is an ideal competing dog for sports like agility and obedience. Professionals approve this attractive dog to be one of the best watchdogs in the world.

According to the American Kennel Club, Chihuahua should stand anywhere between 6 to 9 inches at shoulder height and weighs around 3 to 6 pounds.

Although it has a small size, it owns a very dominant nature. The breed was specifically designed to be a companion dog. But if you have small kids or infants in your home, this dog is not recommended for you.

Siberian Husky

Siberian Husky is known for its wolf-like appearance, beautiful eyes, and thick coat that comes in a variety of colors. The breed was originated in Siberia and brought to Alaska in 1909, however, it is recognized by the AKC in 1930.

Despite its wolfish appearance, it is not a good watchdog because it is quite friendly towards strangers. Although it’s a proud and stubborn dog, with time, it creates a strong bond with every single member of the family.

When it comes to life expectancy, it has a good life span of around 12 to 15 years which is quite long as compared to other breeds.

Eyes:

The eyes are the most attractive part of both of its parent breeds. The Husky has blue eyes while the Chihuahua has almond-shaped eyes. So, you can expect some unique eye colors and shapes in this dog.

Height and Weight:

Since its parent has a huge physical difference, the Chihuahua Husky mix size will entirely rely on the genes it inherited the most. On average the breed will stand anywhere between 6 to 15 inches and weighs around 7 to 15 lbs.

Coat type and color:

The coat type of this designer dog will entirely depend on the parent’s coat. Both parent breeds have various coat types- Chihuahua has two varieties of coats, smooth and long while the Siberian husky has three different coat types; short, plush, and wooly.

Similarly, if you take a look at color both parent breeds have a broader variety regarding coat colors, however, Husky-chi could have white, black, Choco, gray, tan, fawn, and sometimes bi and tricolor of the coat.

Temperament and Behavior

Since it is a new hybrid dog, predicting its temperament and personality could be difficult at this time. All we can do is predict some by looking at its parents.

If the dog inherits Chihuahua traits then it would have an extraordinary personality. It will be quite aggressive towards strangers and small kids. Protective to the owner and will make the bond with only one person of the family. So, the Huskyhuahua may have trouble adjusting to a large family and small children.

If the pup inherits more from Husky, it will most likely be friendly and energetic. You need to be an active and determinant leader to raise this dog.

Exercise Requirements

The Chihuahua Husky Mix or Huskyhuahua will require regular exercise to stimulate its mental and physical health. You have to integrate the training with its exercise necessities.

One hour of daily exercise will be enough for your dog or you can take them out for walks. You can also let them free in your backyard area where they play and run but make sure to show them their boundaries.

Avoid taking them out for playing or walking in hot weather because they could be sensitive.

Toys could become a good source of mental and physical stimulation for your puppy. Toys kill their boredom and keep them engaged. That is why the availability of toys will prevent them from showing destructive behavior.

Training

Early training is the key to a well socialized and obedient dog. You should start training your dog in its puppyhood. Since its ancestors are smart and intelligent, the pup will not take much time in the training session but it may show some stubbornness.

There are a few things that you should keep in your mind while training your Huskyhuahua.

  • Do not lose patience while training because it’s not something that you would do once or twice.
  • You have to be consistent if you want the best result.
  • Avoid harsh behavior and reward every time they give you a positive response.

Grooming

Brushing

Since the breed has various coat types, the grooming will rely on its coat type. But one thing is for sure, it is not a hypoallergenic dog. Shedding tendencies are moderate to low. Therefore, brushing is necessary, once or twice a week is sufficient for their coat. When the shedding season arrives, you should increase the brushing depending on the situation.

Bathing

There is no need to bathe this breed unless it gets into some muddy puddle and becomes dirty. Frequent bathing may lead them to dermatological issues.

Ear, nails, and oral cleaning

Inspect your pup ears regularly to ensure they are clean, dry, and wax-free. Also, trim their nails if needed to prevent breakage. Keep their oral hygiene in check, chewable toys are very helpful for a puppy’s oral health.

Food and Diet

Food and diet rely on the age and size of the breed. Each breed has different dietary requirements. So as a dog parent, you have to find out which diet is suitable for your fur baby.

If we specifically talk about this breed, it needs high-quality dog food that must be rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals.

Keep track of the ingredients whenever you try new food for your dog. If all the essential elements are present then go for it.

It is recommended to ask your veterinarian about your dog’s diet. He/She will help you to make a good diet plan.
